Physical touch is considered a basic human need and an essential part of human relationships. Physical touch has physical, mental and emotional benefits. Common ways to initiate human touch include hugs and holding hands. Some people get great satisfaction from massage therapy, pedicures and manicures.

Touch starvation is a condition that happens when you don’t get as much physical touch as you need. It has developed into a big problem because of the social distancing required during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has also impacted children in orphanages and elderly people in hospitals. This can lead to more stress, anxiety or depression. Touch starvation increases your heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension and breathing. It can negatively affect your immune and digestive systems.

Physical touch can release what are called “feel-good” chemicals. One of the chemicals released from physical touch is oxytocin. Oxytocin increases feelings of trust, security and self esteem. It can aid in forming an emotional connection with another human being. It can inspire positive thinking and an optimistic outlook on the world. It fosters feelings of compassion, which our world desperately needs right now. Physical touch also impacts your dopamine and serotonin levels. These neurotransmitters help regulate your mood and relieve stress and anxiety. Dopamine offsets feelings of anxiety by regulating the pleasure center in your brain. Physical touch and intimacy can also improve your immune system so you’re less likely to get a cold. It can also reduce cortisol levels which impacts how stressed you are. Finally, physical touch can lower your heart rate and blood pressure.

It’s important to communicate with your partner and others about your needs and desires for physical touch. Being autistic, I often avoided physical touch growing up. Nowadays, my husband and I hold hands while we go for walks. I still don’t do hugs that often. Apparently even a weighted blanket can calm your nervous system in the same manner as touch. I sleep with two weighted blankets and they do feel like being hugged. I would highly recommend incorporating physical touch into your day.
